Like many University Libraries, the University of Maryland Libraries face multiple challenges in the effort to build and maintain collections and provide access to the resources needed to support their institutional research and teaching mission.
The collection budget at UMCP, like many other institutions, has failed to keep up with the rising costs of online resources. One result of these budgetary constraints is that the Libraries' subscription to Newspaper Archive will not be renewed. Access to the database will end on March 31, 2016.
Subject librarians on the Collection Development Council collaborated in this decision, which was based on cost and usage. Alternatives to Newspaper Archive, include:
- America's Historical Newspapers (Readex)
- Historical Newspapers (ProQuest)
- Historical Black Newspapers (ProQuest)
