Like many University Libraries, the University of Maryland Libraries faces multiple challenges in the effort to build and maintain collections and provide access to the resources needed to support the institutional research and teaching mission. The collection budget at UMCP, like many other institutions, has failed to keep up with the rising costs of the information marketplace. One result of these budgetary constraints is that the Libraries' subscription to Book Review Index Plus will not be renewed. Access to the database ended in June 2016.
Alternative sources for book reviews include:
- Disciplinary databases, such as America: History and Life for American history, SocINDEX for sociology, and Biological Sciences Collection for life sciences.
- JSTOR, large multidisciplinary collection of journals (lacking most recent issues), many of which contain book reviews.
- Academic Search Complete, multidisciplinary database of journals, many of which include book reviews.
