Like many University Libraries, the University of Maryland Libraries faces multiple challenges in the effort to build and maintain collections and provide access to the resources needed to support the institutional research and teaching mission. The collection budget at UMCP, like many other institutions, has failed to keep up with the rising costs of the information marketplace. One result of these budgetary constraints is that the Libraries' subscription to Compendex will not be renewed. Access to the database ended November 4, 2015. Subject librarians in the STEM disciplines collaborated in this decision, which was based on cost and comparative usage. Alternatives to Compendex, according to studies and comparison tools, include:

  • Web of Science – 56% overlap in journal coverage
  • Google Scholar – See "Elsevier Compendex and Google Scholar: A Quantitative Comparison of Two Resources for Engineering Research and an Update to Prior Comparisons” (2013). The Journal of Academic Librarianship, 39, 241-43. http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0099133313000165
