Good Question. ILL requests must be placed using our ILL system rather than through email due to workflow and copyright concerns. To begin with, if everyone emailed us for ILL, we would simply not be able to keep up. Consequently, we have set up many automated processes in our software that help us cope with the hundreds of requests we receive each day. Next, in order to keep the university in compliance with the law, we use our ILL software to track copyright fees we need to pay, and to manage the incoming documents securely. This means that often, if the ILL request is filled out with enough information, the system can send the request without staff intervention (much faster for you!).
