Thank you so much for your interest in working with UMD Libraries! I'm happy to help answer your question regarding the status of your application.

Just to provide some background: the UMD libraries are made up of 7 branches consisting of multiple units within those branches. So you don't have to apply separately to all these departments, the libraries constructed a central application portal that houses all the student applications. These applications are then made available to all library student supervisors to sort through if/when they are hiring students.

Due to the nature of our application pool, our constant hiring, as well as the sheer volume of applications we receive, you may not hear back from us at all. I know this is not ideal for students like you who are actively seeking out employment but unfortunately, for now, it's really the only way we can all navigate the hundreds of applications we get each semester and keep them on file for openings that come up mid semester.

Having said that, my best advice is to keep an eye on your email throughout the first 4-6 weeks of the semester. This is when most student hiring is taking place as units work to finalize scheduling. If a department is interested in interviewing you they will be sure to reach out via email. If you have not heard back from anyone after that time, there’s a good chance your application was not selected this semester.

If you are looking for confirmation that your application was submitted successfully and/or you need to make any changes to your application, you’ll want to contact the Library’s Human Resources office at libhr@umd.edu or at (301) 405-9245.

Lastly, while student employment at the libraries is competitive, I encourage you to keep applying as long as you're interested and available! Applications are posted for each semester (including Winter and Summer). Student positions open up regularly due to people graduating, leaving for internships, or any number of reasons so it’s always worth putting your name in the pool!

Thanks again for your interest in working with the Libraries!  Best of luck in your job search and thank you for using AskUs!
