PDFs can be tricky to remediate! Depending on your level of access to editing the PDF, there are several ways to remediate.

For PDFs you own:

Use the original file in Google Docs or Microsoft Word and remediate the content in those programs. When you are doing an accessibility check and remediating content, be sure to focus on:

  • Proper heading markup and structure;
  • Descriptive links;
  • Proper color and contrast;
  • Images include meaningful alternative text;
  • Accessible and properly formatted tables.

For PDFs you do not own:

Use Adobe Acrobat Pro (available in TerpWare) accessibility checker to remediate PDFs.

You can find more information about remediating PDFs and using accessibility checkers in Adobe Acrobat Pro, Microsoft Word, and Google Docs in the UMD Libraries Digital Accessibility Resources LibGuide.
