VPN is an acronym for Virtual Private Network. It provides an encrypted and secure connection “tunnel” from a user's machine to its destination through the public internet. VPN must be enabled through a client software to watch a film on Films@UM

Do I need anything special in order to use the VPN?

In order to download and use the VPN client software, you must have a University of Maryland Directory ID and Password. This is to ensure that only those affiliated with UMD can use this service.

What platforms are supported?

Supported VPN client software is available for Windows, Macintosh, and Linux. Click on a platform below to be connected to the download and installation instructions for that operating system (OS).

Windows:   Windows 8 / Windows 7 / Windows Vista
Macintosh:  Macintosh OS X 10.6 and later

Linux:        Anyconnect-Linux

iPhone:      Installing and Configuring the VPN Client for the iPad 2

How To Use the VPN Software:

Once you have installed VPN, open the application. Make sure you are connected to the internet through your service provider. In the "Connect to" box, enter and press Select.

In the Group drop-down menu, you will see several options: UMD (which will allow you to connect to UMD resources while using a wired connection), UMD-‐Wireless, and UMApps. Choose UMD.  After selecting the Group, enter your directory ID and password and click Connect.

Once you have done that, you are set. The client will establish a virtual connection to the network you have selected. When you are finished with the VPN client, simply click Disconnect, and close the application.
